Brilliant innovationJourney through our decades of “firsts”

 1970s
Sam Obert purchases Holiday Inn’s lighting factory and renames it the Challenger Lighting Company. Later, he acquires the Texans Inc. ceramic plant, combining forces to produce popular Art Deco lamps.

1992
Challenger Lighting Company expands to hard-wire fixtures and creates the first convenience outlet in a lamp base. This begins a trend that later includes modem lines morphing to USB outlets.

2002
By partnering with a high-quality Chinese production facility, we give customers the flexibility of choosing domestic or import products. Design and engineering capabilities remain in the U.S.

2004
We introduce the first LED headboard reading lamp at HD Design that becomes an industry favorite. Challenger supports early adopters to LED technology, with conversion from incandescent or CFL lamping sources.

2006
Challenger Lighting Company receives a U.S. patent for the Brilliant Audio Lamp, which gives guests the convenience of charging and enjoying their audio devices at the base of a desk lamp. It becomes a hospitality staple.

2010
Moving beyond guestroom lighting, we expand to handle large, custom public space pieces made from nearly any material, including wood, metal, crystal, acrylic, mica—even garbage can lids and martini glasses!

2014
We expand to our current 90,000 square foot facility in Batavia, Illinois. Engineering, production, warehousing and administrative teams all collaborate under one roof, and delivery to most of the U.S. occurs in less than three days.

2015
The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certifies Challenger Lighting Company as a Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB).

2016
Challenger Lighting Company delivers more than 15,000 items for the largest hotel opening of the year, The Loews Universal Sapphire Falls in Florida—on- time and on-budget.

2017
An industry leader in hospitality lighting, Challenger Lighting Company is the largest supplier to Marriott CFRST properties, Hyatt Place and Hyatt House. We serve virtually every major brand—including IHG Holiday Inn—with program standards. We continue to be the choice for import and domestic lighting.
